Amina Kaskar

Amina Kaskar is a professional architect, having obtained a Masters in Architecture from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and recently completed a Masters in Human Settlements from KU Leuven, Belgium. She is the co-founder of Counterspace, a collaborative architectural studio dedicated to architectural projects, exhibition design, art installations, public events curation and urban design. Counterspace was recently listed in the top 100 architecture firms in the world by Domus Magazine. She is also, a CETA associate lecturer in the Wits School of Architecture and recently ran the Advanced Design Studio Elective for the Honours program at Wits, entitled Housing Ecologies. Her work is predominantly formed with ideas towards gender, migration, inclusivity, otherness, and future; using image and narrative as a means to deconstruct and reconstruct the city. She recently joined WiSER as a Phd fellow. She was awarded the Global Minds (Vlir-ous) scholarship to complete a Phd at KU Leuven. Her proposed Phd is entitled “Afro-Indo Agendas: South Asian female migration to South Africa and the shaping of urban space”.
