Charne Lavery is a senior lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Pretoria and co-director, with Isabel Hofmeyr, of Oceanic Humanities for the Global South (www.oceanichumanities.com). She is the author of Writing Ocean Worlds: Indian Ocean Fiction in English (Palgrave 2021) and is working on By the Deep Sea: The Vertical Indian Ocean (Yale UP). She is Principal Investigator of a South African National Research Foundation project on 'Antarctica, Africa and the Arts', and a South African Humanities and Social Sciences delegate to the international Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR). She is also co-editor of the Palgrave series Maritime Literature and Culture, board member of the journals Global Nineteenth-Century Studies and Alizés, and has recently co-edited special issues on on ‘Water’ (Wasafiri), ‘Thinking Oceanically’ (Eastern African Literary and Cultural Studies) and ‘Reading for Water’ (Interventions), in addition to two co-edited books, Maritime Mobilities in Anglophone Literature and Culture (Palgrave) and Reading from the South (Wits Press). She was awarded a Stellenbosch Institute of Advanced Studies (STIAS) research fellowship for 2023.
