Joel Pearson is a Post-Doctoral Fellow at WISER. He has undertaken extensive research on the local state in rural South Africa. His PhD dissertation focused on the spatial, administrative and extractivist histories that have together shaped the ground of contemporary governance in the Mogalakwena Local Municipality, Limpopo Province. His research interests remain directed towards rural histories, ethnographic studies of the state, party-state relations, modes of popular politics, and the social dynamics attending processes of resource extraction. He has previously worked as a researcher at the Public Affairs Research Institute (PARI) and as a lecturer in the Department of History at Wits.
