Trust Techbros Series | Crypto in Africa
WISER's Trust Project invites you to an online panel discussion:
Crypto in Africa
What is crypto doing to African politics and African economies? If the story of Binance in Nigeria is anything to go by, there is good reason to believe that it is undermining African currencies while opening a new and much more dramatic path for extraversion. But there are many ways that crypto is being adopted across the continent. In the Central African Republic, for example, the government tried to use Crypto to raise funds when its international donors dried up; in South Africa, there are new efforts to regulate crypto and bring it into the mainstream of the country’s financial architecture. In this discussion, we extend our focus on the politics of the ‘techbros’ to examine the effects of cryptocurrencies on African political economies. As cryptomarkets flourish under Donald Trump’s presidency, African currencies and African central banks seem to have an uncertain future.
Join us for an online panel discussion with Babatunde Okunoye, Lindsey Schutters, Gareth Stobie, and moderated by Laura Phillips on 8 October 2025, 6.00pm
