This paper, a draft article, looks at the different forms that suspicion and its obverse, trust, take in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It looks specifically at the occult in relation to other forms of suspicion about surface appearances, and how people try to construct durable forms of social value through reading surfaces.
