Notes on Human Rights in Africa: A Public Presentation and Conversation

Tuesday, 5 August

18:00-20:00

WiSER Seminar Room

Acclaimed novelist Nuruddin Farah will be in conversation with John Masterson, author of The Disorder of Things: A Foucauldian Approach to the Work of Nuruddin Farah, and award winning Professor Achille Mbembe.

Nuruddin Farah’s life and work offer a powerful commentary and critique on the idea of human rights as it relates to Africa’s development. Himself an exile whose own literary works were targeted for their representations of the harsh realities in which Somalis and other Africans found themselves living, Nuruddin Farah has captured the imagination of readers through his characters and narratives in a way that challenges them to reconsider what is meant by the very term 'human rights'. This keynote event will feature a brief reading by the critically-acclaimed author from his recent works followed by an in-depth conversation that will include the author,  the distinguished professor Achille Mbembe, and, John Masterson, the author of the The Disorder of Things: a Foucauldian Approach to the Work of Nuruddin Farah.

This keynote event will mark the launch of a two-day workshop collaboration between the University of Witwatersrand and Bard College titled 'The Arts of Human Rights' (5-7 August 2014).
