Abstract: Using previously neglected primary sources, this preliminary paper traces the early common history of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and the Chamber of Mines, showing interdependence by demonstrating their mutual contribution and commitment to the development of the gold mining industry in and around Johannesburg. Most importantly, the paper argues that it was the attempt to control the flow of industrial statistics that prompted influential members of the JSE to restructure the Chamber in the wake of the capital crisis of 1889.
