WiSER and Wits University Press invite you to a lunchtime book launch and discussion on
Jochen Arndt’s book,
DIVIDED BY THE WORD: Colonial Encounters and the Remaking of Zulu and Xhosa Identities
In his book Jochen Arndt examines how the South African languages isiXhosa and isiZulu came into being and shows how the boundaries of these languages and ethnic identities were constantly shaped and reshaped over centuries by African interpreters and translators, European missionaries and mission rivalries, intellectuals, educators, and apartheid ideologues.
Hlonipha Mokoena will be in discussion with the author about the ways in which colonial forces generate and impose ethnic divides with long-lasting and lethal consequences.
