After Memory: Dementia Narratives in and from the Global South
Safundi (Taylor & Francis Group)
Guest Editors:
Prof. Hedley Twidle (University of Cape Town)
Dr. Oscar Ortega-Montero (WiSER, Wits University)
As dementia rates rise globally, with the greatest projected increase occurring across Africa and other regions of the Global South, this special issue invites interdisciplinary research on dementia, memory loss, ageing, care, personhood, and related cultural representations.
We welcome contributions exploring how literature, film, visual arts, memoir, performance, digital media, and other cultural forms engage with dementia and altered memory beyond purely medical frameworks. Particular attention will be given to questions of care, collective memory, historical trauma, migration, family histories, ageing, stigma, and the politics of remembering and forgetting in postcolonial, post-conflict, and deeply divided societies.
The issue seeks to expand dementia studies beyond Euro-American contexts by foregrounding perspectives from Africa, South America, South Asia, and other regions of the Global South.
