Yasmina Martin at Wits

We are very pleased that Yasmina Martin, a recent recipient of a Fulbright scholarship currently based at Amhest College in the US, will be joining the Wits History Department and WiSER to do research on LGBT rights in South Africa. She describes her project:

As an internationally recognized figure, Simon Nkoli has been applauded for his success in building transnational connections and successfully combining the struggles against homophobia and racism in South Africa. As a Fulbright fellow, I hope to closely examine Nkoli's local impact. I plan to study the organizational frameworks and movement strategies that Nkoli engaged with as founder of the Gay and Lesbian Witwatersrand (GLOW). I also want to specifically examine his work with HIV positive black men in Johannesburg's townships with a hope to elicit successful movement strategies that could be used to combat homophobia today, both in South Africa and in the United States.
