Jonathan Klaaren is Professor of Law and Society at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is appointed at the Law School and at the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research (WiSER). He teaches, researches, and writes in the areas of human rights, competition law, and socio-legal studies. His most recent monograph is From Prohibited Immigrants to Citizens: The Origins of Citizenship and Nationality in South Africa (2017). His current research interests are in the African legal profession (including access to justice), competition policy and African economic regulation, and migration law. He has served as the Director of the Mandela Institute and as Head of the School of Law. In 2016, he was appointed as an Acting Judge on the High Court of South Africa (South Gauteng).
