The Gates Foundation and Visions of Global Health: Politics of Knowledge Production, Nation-States and Philanthropy

The colony had long served as a laboratory for the production of new scientific and political knowledge. But what happens when parts of the global South, assertive and powerful in their own right, become crucibles for experimentation? This talk will examine how the Gates Foundation has embraced an expansive understanding of experimentality as it has undertaken programs in different parts of the world including India, China and South Africa. These programs have been typically welcomed by state governments, blurring older boundaries between the public, the private, the philanthropic, and academia. Moreover, they have been distinctive from older development initiatives in their experimental ethos. The talk will query the kinds of knowledge that get privileged, and how this shapes understandings of technoscience, progress and governance.
