PSYCHOSOCIAL STUDIES: BEYOND ACADEMIC BOUNDARIES, CONNECTING WITH POLITICS

Visiting Professor of Psychology, Ian Parker, from the University of Leichester will deliver the Umthombo Public Lecture on his paper that explores the contributions and limitations of psychoanalytic ideas in the new field of psychosocial research and implications for politics. Psychoanalysis offers a framework for reading in order that the researcher may better attend to the forms of subjectivity circulating in the text. The contribution of Lacanian approaches to the unconscious and politics is reviewed, and an argument is made for an approach to discourse that attends to psychoanalysis rather than an approach that presumes it.
