What is Western Philosophy?

Presented by Lucy Allais

Monday, 8 May, 2017 - 15:00

In this paper I argue that there are a number of problems with the notion of western Philosophy and that these need to be taken seriously in thinking about changing the curriculum. I argue that the account of western philosophy that has, at least in the past few hundred years, been taken by European and north American philosophers as their tradition involves claiming for themselves ideas to which it is not obvious that they have proprietary rights, and that rejecting methodologies and topics as western is in danger of wrongly recognising these wrongful claims.
