On Violence: an intergenerational conversation about women's resistance
A conversation between Sisonke Msimang (writer, WISER Writing Fellow), Zubeida Jaffer (journalist, activist and author of Beauty of the Heart, The Life and Times of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke) and Simamkele Dlakavu (a key leader within the #RememberKhwezi campaign)
We find ourselves in a particularly dangerous time for women. And yet, as evidenced by the example of Charlotte Maxeke, South African women have played a leading role in resistance politics since the early 20th century, fighting for racial and gender equality. Since 1994, the struggle for gender equality has been waged in both the public and private sphere. As rates of femicide and rape have soared in ‘private,’ so too has the ugly and violent rhetoric of sexism and patriarchy in the public domain. Lead by two powerful activist voices of resistance, this conversation will look at the ways South African women have grappled with patriarchy and examine how they have campaigned to end public and private violence across generations.
