Applications to the School of Social Science 2021-22 - Political Mobilizations and Social Movements

Sunday, 1 November, 2020 - 23:30

Each year, approximately 25 scholars are selected as Members in the School of Social Science. A completed doctorate or equivalent is required by the application deadline. Memberships are awarded at both the junior and senior levels. They are for the full academic year only unless the scholar is from a country with an academic calendar that is substantially different than the one in the U.S., in which case single-term Memberships will be considered. Scholars may be considered for a second residency if a sufficient amount of time has passed since their initial Membership.

Members are expected only to pursue their own research and participate in the seminars. The theme for 2021-22 is "Political Mobilizations and Social Movements," but applications outside the theme are also welcomed. An interdisciplinary dialogue will be fostered and applications are strongly encouraged from scholars across the social sciences, whether or not their research corresponds to the theme.

Funding for Member stipends is individually negotiated, taking into account the applicant’s base salary and the level of sabbatical and other grant support that he or she can secure. In setting compensation, the School attempts to provide half of the current academic base salary for all Members, up to a maximum stipend of $75,000.

The applications portal for 2021-2022 is now open : https://applications.ias.edu/login1.php

Applications must be filed electronically through the Institute’s online application system. They will be accepted beginning June. The deadline is November 1. It is expected that the selection process will be completed by early January. The application process is highly competitive, with the School able to accept less than 10% of the scholars who apply.

The application requires online submission of a research project, a curriculum vitae, and a writing sample. The sample must be in English, no longer than 50 pages, and in Adobe Acrobat format. Two letters of reference are required; three is the maximum allowed.

When you have completed the application and are ready to submit it, remember that you will not be able to make any changes after submission.  It is possible, when relevant, to apply for both the School of Social Science and the School of Historical Studies, but the email address provided must be a different one for each application. IMPORTANT: You should receive an email confirmation that the application has been received. If you have not received this within one day, please email an inquiry to sssappqueries@ias.edu.
